Pilar Peigh, MA CCC-SLP – In this 1 hour course, Pilar will provide a very broad overview of the history of special education, definitions provided through IDEA, how to find some resources and the difference between IEPs and 504 plans.
The landscape of special education can seem very overwhelming. There are a lot of assumptions and possible misunderstandings that exist, which could cause communication breakdowns and unmet expectations. This is not a workshop that offers any legal advice. The intent is to help individuals have a foundational understanding so that more information about special education can be added down the road.
The main purpose of this 1 hour workshop is to provide parents and caregivers a broad overview of what special education is and how it came to be. A very brief history will be provided, along with an abbreviated timeline that includes some key laws. A very brief, non-legal overview of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) will be provided, as well as how to find resources on the US Department of Education website. Definitions will be provided for common terms heard in special education, as well as an initial overview of the differences between Special Education services through IDEA and accommodations provided in Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
No professional development hours/accreditations are offered for this workshop. In addition, no certificate of attendance is provided. This workshop's sole purpose is informational.
