Join us as Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC-SLP discusses how teach students to read the room, be situationally aware, and utilize this situational intelligence for effective task execution.
The 360 Thinking program differs from other programs in that it begins with the foundation of executive functioning: situational awareness (SA). SA allows individuals to “stop and read the room” by processing and updating information about their environment to guide them in planning, self-monitoring, and goal-setting. The key features of SA include spatial, temporal, object, and social information. We refer to these features as “S.T.O.P.”: Space, Time, Objects, and People.
The ability to “read the room” is an “online” skill that happens quickly and is critical for transitioning from “static” SA to understanding context in “real-time” and developing the ability for rapid, flexible, “big-picture” thinking. SA helps students develop independent self-regulation and the ability to go from “now” to “next”. It involves self- directed observation and decision-making, such as determining what is expected in a given situation and what actions are necessary to meet those expectations.
In this seminar, we will show you how to teach students to read the room, be situationally aware, and utilize this situational intelligence for effective task execution. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of SA, as students have had to adapt to altered virtual and post-virtual learning environments that have reduced the traditional cues that guide students. This has amplified SA weaknesses in students with EF impairments and has impacted the SA of otherwise “neurotypical” students.
