Increase processing speed. Executive function challenges, processing speed and behavior deficits often go hand-in-hand. Processing speed difficulties can limit productivity and executive function skills to complete routines; follow instructions; finish homework; listen/read and take notes/summarize; integrate and encode information; write assignments that require complex thoughts; transition between tasks; acquire new material; and reason under time demands. Slow PS can bog students down in the details and they can’t distinguish relevant from minor details and see the big picture. Learn practical strategies to improve processing speed to increase the automaticity with which students can follow routines and directions, complete tasks, and manage complex assignments.
Who should attend?
Special Education teachers, SLPs, OTs, counselors, regular education teachers, administrators, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, PTs, principals, nurses, parents, and anyone who works with someone on the autism spectrum, ADHD, bi-polar, or other learning disabilities or has executive functioning deficits.

Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC-SLP
Sarah Ward has over 25 years of experience in diagnostic evaluations, treatment and case management of children, adolescents and adults with language learning disabilities, nonverbal learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, executive dysfunction, Asperger’s disorders and social pragmatics. Her particular specialty is in the assessment and treatment of executive function deficits. Ms. Ward holds a faculty appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions where she provides instruction to graduate level students in the assessment and treatment of individuals with traumatic brain injury and other cognitive communication disorders. A popular speaker, Sarah regularly presents nationally and internationally on the topic of executive functions to a variety of professional and parent organizations, school and lay groups. She has presented to and consulted with over 450 public and private schools in Massachusetts and across the United States. Awards received include the MGH Expertise in Clinical Practice Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Faculty in Excellence Award from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (2002, 2011).

- Participants will be able to summarize the relationship between speed of information processing and executive function skills.
- Participants will be able to describe 5 therapy interventions that use block and box schema training to improve a student’s schematic knowledge for following routines, making decisions, processing time, processing and responding to oral and written information and planning tasks.
- Participants will be able to describe how to use visual processing and conditional reasoning schemas to quickly process figurative language.
